http://new.skoda-auto.com/COM/about/info/news/News/Pages/2010_20_SalesQ1.aspx Sales in the first quarter of 2010 4/16/2010 Škoda Auto sales in the first quarter of 2010 increased by 25% compared to last year, to 178,901 vehicles. March sales marked a record in company's history.
This growth was substantially boosted by the increasing demand on the Chinese automotive market, where the total of 42,707 Škoda vehicles were delivered to customers, i.e. a 122 percent increase against the same period of 2009. In March itself, the car maker delivered the total of 72,900 Škoda vehicles to customers all around the world, representing the highest-ever monthly sales in the company's history.
Škoda Auto saw impressive sales growth in the first quarter also on markets in Central Europe (+13 %; 27,995 vehicles, particularly in the Czech Republic and Poland) and Western Europe (+13 %; 85,187 vehicles). Germany has remained the strongest market in terms of sales volumes, even though the local market experienced a significant drop in the year-to-year comparison. This trend affected Škoda Auto deliveries as well.
Even Western European markets excluding Germany showed positive development with sales rising by 43% to 56,763 sold vehicles in comparison with the previous year. Great Britain emerged as an important driving force with 11,704 sold vehicles, representing a year-on-year growth of Škoda sales by 72 %. Deliveries in Spain, Portugal or Norway experienced dynamic growth as well.
The most popular Škoda vehicle in the first quarter was Octavia (77,192 vehicles; i.e. +32 %). The second most successful model was Škoda Fabia (52,700 vehicles; i.e. -3%). The fastest growing sales were those of the Škoda Superb model (20,514 vehicles; i.e. +119%). Customers also showed strong interest in the Škoda Yeti SUV (12,195 vehicles). Furthermore, the car maker sold 7,886 Roomster vehicles and 8,414 Octavia Tour vehicles.
„Sales results of Škoda Auto show a positive trend and are influenced by the dynamic development in China. Growth impulses also came from some of the European countries. Regarding prospects for the current year, we remain optimistic, yet cautious. The future of the new models such as Yeti and Superb Combi is promising, as they achieved sales success that exceeded our expectations. In general, we will continue on the path to growth," said Reinhard Fleger, Škoda Auto board member for sales and marketing.
